IMM 2011, Switzerland 07/05/2011
2000 Minis, 3 days in Switzerland and a long drive there and back! Harry's Mini made it all the way and it was an amazing adventure for both of us. There was plenty of lovely driving through the mountains on roads no wider than the support vehicle, delicious buttery croissants and beautiful scenery that took your breath away. I can't wait for next year! Full write up in the 'Minis' Tab under 'IMM 2011'.Add Comment New Blue Mini! 03/15/2011
Well it's turquoise really, a very pretty, shiny classic Mini Sidewalk :) I collected it on Sunday with most of the family and Harry and have pretty much been driving her non stop since hehe! I love my mini and people turn round to look at her as we drive past. Especially because she has a special loud exhaust that really does growl :) I'm going to raise the front shock absorbers to stop the tires rubbing on the wheel arches and I have temporarily fixed a couple of bits on the grille. I will slowly mend the areas that have a little spot of rust bubbles as and when I can. I'm really looking forward to going on runs with the Norfolk Mini Owners Club later this year and I'll make a new blog just for the mini to show updates etc. The Drive Home 01/06/2011
After watching the little red mini speed off into the distance I turned the car and started my journey back. All went well for a while and I was happily listening to the radio as the car purred beneath me. Then, as i approached a corner a massive black thing, some 4x4 or other, came towards me with its huge wheels way over my side of the road. I mooshed myself into the side and was too shocked to beep him as he sailed merrily on by. Then, just before capping the brow of a hill (Yes, we do have some in Norfolk) I saw a really good photo opportunity so applied the brakes hardish so I didn't overshoot it. The pedal under my foot juddered and creaked and the car carried on. I thought the brakes had gone! Or a wheel had fallen off. It took me a few seconds to realise that the brakes were still connected to the wheels and they in turn were still connected to the car and the juddering was in fact my ABS as I skidded on the ice that was so 'black' it was invisible. Scary. And I had to reverse for ages to get the spot for the photo again, grr. Milly's Birthday! 09/24/2010
Thankyou Milly! Hope you had a really good day :) We went to the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market and ate the most delicious meal EVER! I was so full! And then afterwards we trawled the shops and found this sweet place selling vintage clothing. An awesome hat-trying-on session commenced! :D I wish I could have lived in the 20's (although as someone pointed out, living between the two world wars wasn't great!). I can't believe everyone is going off to university so soon, I am going to miss all of you! Mini's and Go-karts 09/19/2010
I have been introduced to the wonderfulness of Mini's and am now irreversibly hooked to say the least! Harry drove me in his awesome little car down to the Karting track, Red Lodge- 50 miles away from his, yesterday. You get numbed to the noise and shakiness fairly soon into the trip and I couldn't stop smiling the entire way. He introduced me to a few other 'Mini-mad' people and off we went in a convoy to Red Lodge ("A whole line of Minis- amazing"). I felt a little new as I had never been in a Mini before but the group were all so nice. We got kitted out and were ready to begin our 'Grand Prix' consisting of a qualifier of 4 laps, two 20 lap races and then a final for the top ten (out of sixteen). I was terrified to say the least but when we got in to do our first four laps it was awesome!! I came 4th in the two races, putting me 7th in the final. Into kart 7 I got, remarking at its luckiness. I watched the lights and as soon as they were green I put my foot flat on the floor and nudged through three people straight off. Up to somewhere near 50/60mph we approached the first corner, where I took another person, thinking 'What the?.... Must be a good car!' Passing the line 3rd after one lap, I kept up the speed to stay where I was but found myself catching up to number 2 and by the 2nd lap I was 2nd! 'Blimey' I thought. Catching up with the leader for the next six laps, I managed to nip past him with my weight advantage and bombed round the long corner flat out, tyres squealing in protest. The bumps in the track were so exaggerated and my vision was blurred from shaking! We played a bit of cat and mouse for the next couple of laps, with him overtaking me then me clawing back and suddenly I was happily in the lead. I had no idea how I'd got there and then began panicking that I would anger people as I was very new to the group! I could feel my rear being shunted on many occasions and then it started to drizzle. The first thing you notice is that the grip just goes. Corners are no longer tarmacked, they are more akin to ice-rinks. I slipped my way round them and the lap time increased from around 59.5 secs to 1 minute 37.5 secs!! Nonetheless, I still held first place. On lap 17 I was just rounding the last corner slowly (as it was very slippy anyway) and suddenly I understeered and just went straight. Foot off break, no effect, kick of the accelerator, err, no effect, ploughing into tyre wall, weeeellll, at least it stopped me!! I put my arms in the air for a steward and just laughed! At least I didnt have to worry about making people angry! Ahhhhh, I ended up 6th, after overtaking the only person I could, and grinned the entire way. Harry came 3rd in the first race and 1st in the second (WOO well done!) so started well in the final. However, once the track became slippy he was given a contact warning (the only one of the day and NOT deserved at all- the slipping wasn't controllable) and then on the same corner I was sat in the tyre wall, a massive pile up occured and Harry slid at 40mph ish straight into another kart! He mooshed the exhaust pipe into his back tyre but kept driving until he was taken off! We all smelt the rubber as it burnt itself away!! I really enjoyed it, as of course did everyone else, and i'm sending massive thankyou's to Harry for taking me :) And today, I have spent the morning on the computer looking at mini's and debating if I could afford one!! Bring Bring... 09/06/2010
'The phone's ringing, oh well, someone else will answer it' I thought about ten minutes ago as I sat typing on the computer. However after a few rings had passed and it was clear no-one had made a move to pick it up I leapt off my beanbag, cracking my head on our drum set as I went. 'This better be worth it' I grumbled as I dodged Remy's boxing bag and my laundry basket. Leaping onto my bed I scrabbled down the side for the phone, (which had fallen there somehow) acutely aware it was about to stop ringing. My fingers found it and I hurriedly pressed the green answer button, moving it to my ear as I did. "Did you know, over a thousand people DIE a year without having written a will?" The perfectly tuned ladies voice of an automated message said, "It could happen to YOU next." 'Right', I thought, rubbing my sore head angrily whilst hanging up the phone. 'You nearly caused that by making me answer you, it probably would have made your day...' And Fill in the Gap 09/05/2010
Wow. It has been an insanely long time since I last wrote on here! There has been so much going on. I will outline the most important... - I have finished school! It only really hit me today when Remy (my brother) returned from the evening induction thingy my (ex-)school does in his uniform, and met me at our front gate as I drove in from sailing. - I got good results for my A-levels, an amazing and lovely surprise :) On the drive from collecting them at school to sailing I sang and screamed the entire way. - I passed my sailing instructors course, despite being seriously tired becaaause... I finished my last exam on the 29th July, shopped for my Val Ball (prom) dress the next day, did my Level 2 Powerboat the next day, Speech Day after that and of course Val Ball that evening overflowing to 4am the next day, and then up at 8am for the pre-assesment followed by the 5 day course and then off to Greece on the evening of the last day! Phew. - I spent three long weeks in Greece (and have really blond hair as a result of it). Also, as well as being so happy the entire time the sailing school we used for the last week have invited me back to teach there next year so fingers crossed I can! - I PASSED MY DRIVING TEST!! Woohoo, I take back that comment about liking being a learner- It is NOTHING in comparison to the freedom you gain after passing :D And apparently I was the lady's most comfortable test in a very long time and I also passed first time wth only 2 minors. Yay! (Not boasting) - I have recieved my first proper pay-cheque from NorfolkETC (The sailing school I work at) which made me feel 'All Grown Up' hehe. And my job is also the best in the world, I love it :) - I conquered the biggest ride at Cromer with a very brave, good friend of mine and I thank him for that (Thankyou!!) Although the ride did feel as if you were about to plummet into the floor at any moment and you frequently were spun upsidedown! Eek I have loved my summer so so much and have been on a high nearly all the way through (Happiness induced, nothing else hehe) and I really hope my Gap Year continues in the same fashion! Driving with L Plates 07/07/2010
Although I would love to take my driving test and finally be free to roam wherever I wish, I have recently seen the advantages of having those red and white magnets stuck to my dear old car! For example over the past few days as I drive down the single track roads, even though I am perfectly capable of stopping too, the majority of cars dive for the nearest passing place or even mount the verge! Therefore giving my K1MBY a clear run home!! Suits me fine to be honest. One More Thing... 06/28/2010
I can now claim that I am only one exam off finishing my A-levels! It is such a good feeling :) Chemi went well so I'm pleased about that (thanks Tom for the link!) and now there's just Physics. More hen related stuff- They hate lawnmowers. On hearing Dad come close both mummy hens and chick scurried away, toward the fence. Chick popped through but the big hens got stuck and were really stressing out! I had to go rescue them... - They hate being separated. I was revising for chemi and suddenly heard a flurry of cheeping and squalks. Chick had fallen off the back of their cage behind the drier and was stuck and mummies were, again, stressing out. I had to go rescue them... AND FINALLY... Fate is an amazing thing. On arriving at big school I looked through my books to find I hadn't got my calculator! Luckily mum had just dropped off some water so was just outside with the car and could whizz back to Britten (my boarding house) to get it! Here's the story behind it... Mum went to Britten to drop off my phones etc and bumped into Lynne, one of the cleaners. She took mum to my room and said will I be cleaning it out today and had a look in a drawer to see if there was much stuff in it. Mum, on seeing the contents of the drawer (water bottles) remembered that I may want one in the exam and asked Lynne if she (mum) had time to drop it over. Lynne said "If you're quick" so off mum went. According to Lynne, she says that no more than one minute later was mum back, after seeing me, exclaiming she needs a calculator! The gist is- If Lynne hadn't opened that drawer and seen the water bottles with mum then I wouldn't have had my calculator. I Love Fate. |
